The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is located on the first floor of the Hospital Joan XXIII in Tarragona and has 30 beds with full equipment, trained to assist patients with severe disease. The service offers specialized assistance to more than 1000 patients per year of which, about a 20%, comes from other Centres. It is a polyvalent ICU, dealing with complex medical diseases, in addition to serious traumatic pathologies. It is the UCI's reference of the province of Tarragona for critically ill patients with trauma (Trauma code), including the neurosurgical and cerebral vascular accident patients needing fibrinolytic therapy (Ictus code).


Simultaneously with the clinical activity, the group develops an intense activity of research and teaching. The ICU is credited for the formation of critical care residents. It also receives residents of other specialties for your rotation in the ICU. The UCI members participate in the teaching activity of the Rovira i Virgili University, where coordinated the intensive medicine course. They also develop seminars and workshops for students of medicine. The ICU Group also organizes postgraduate courses and scientific meetings with a great success.
The UCI research group develops several research projects on severe respiratory infections, inflammation and critical patient safety. The research group is integrated by a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, nurses, biochemist, microbiologists, pharmacist and epidemiologists who develop studies in collaboration with national and international centres. The high levels of research have consolidated to the ICU group in the national and international scientific panorama, and it is supported by numerous publications of high Impact factor.
